Is it an urban myth that it always rains in Manchester?
Does rain in Manchester ruin our fun? Whenever Manchester is spoken about people often jokingly comment – “oh it always rains there doesn’t it?”
One of the first topics I thought I would discuss in this my new blog is this It’s only going to be short and sweet as the answer is Yes! it is an urban myth and No it doesn’t always rain in Manchester
I know it rains a lot and skies are often grey but in my experience when myself and Mr Fitz travel anywhere else in the Country we regularly experience rain – maybe it’s just us – our theme tune should be “Why does it always rain on me”!
What are the facts?
An analysis of National rainfall in 2015 when average rainfall was looked at Manchester only came out as 15th – Number one was Cardiff
The analysis revealed that even when consecutive days rainfall were looked out Manchester was still only 5th.
So that has put that popular (or unpopular if you’re Mancunian always at the butt of those jokes!) Urban Myth to bed that there is not always rain in Manchester
All you Mancunians may think it does rain a lot but it’s no worse than anywhere else – but hand up who always panics if you don’t carry an umbrella in your bag. However, it has to be said that even though it may not be as wet as we think compared to other areas but it is never as nice as it is further South such as London or Cornwall on the Gulf stream. I wouldn’t move though and love my City.
Even if it does rain there are still so many places to visit and enjoy. A rise in Cafe Culture has seen an increase in outside seating in recent years but there are still enough venues to visit on a grey wet miserable day off to make you feel sunny inside.
I’m interested to hear if you get sick of hearing this phrase or if you are surprised that we are not the wettest City in the UK – I welcome your comments, do you have a favourite hangout to visit on a dismal day? – let me know I’m always keen to try new places. Or you can email me
